Getting Back into a Routine for the School Year

SlimFast Plan Consultant and Registered Dietitian, Maryann Walsh shares her tips on how to start or maintain healthy habits while preparing your family to go back to school this fall.

1. Make a Plan for Healthy Habits

Many families will be heading back to school and the office this fall. It’s important to take some time to plan for this return to our routines and how we can either continue with or improve upon our health and wellness habits!

2. Establish a Self-Care Routine

It can be so important to our productivity to take a few minutes out of the day for ourselves. Be patient with yourself as you get back to your routine and make sure you still allow yourself time to take care of you. Try setting aside at least 10 minutes a day to do something you enjoy. This can include:

● Taking a walk
● Reading a good book
● Taking an extra-long shower/bath
● Journaling
● Meditation, yoga, etc.!

3. Start Slow with Exercise

When picking your exercise routine back up, start slow. Try a manageable activity like walking around your neighborhood or riding a bike. Just get moving doing something that you enjoy! Start with a commitment of ten minutes of movement if you need to, then increase the amount of time you move each week! Ask your spouse, family member, or child to join you as well for some quality time and accountability!

*Always remember to check with your doctor prior to beginning any exercise routine

4. Incorporate Healthier Eating Habits

If cookouts and beach snacks got the best of you this summer, use the start of the new season to recharge your healthy eating habits! Try being more mindful about including more healthy foods into your diet so you can feel better overall. Try adding more fruits and veggies into your meals, and try out some new recipes from SlimFast.com/Recipes. Swap out that frozen pizza for chicken breast or have fresh fruit as a snack rather than a bag of chips. Make it a family affair by cutting up fruits and veggies as snacks for you and your kids! Lastly, remember that the SlimFast Plan is a great way to get back into healthier eating habits, and the convenient ready-to-drink shakes and bars are great for a nutritious meal on-the-go!

5. Practice Open Communication.

Talk openly with the whole family about what’s working and what’s not. Or if it’s just you, take a few minutes each week to take note of what is working for you and what isn’t. As you ease back into your routine, be sure to continue these frequent family or self-check-ins and reassess or make tweaks and adjustments to your routine as needed to set you and your family up for success.
