Tips for Maintaining Proper Work & Life Balance

The concept of a healthy work-life balance may be easier said than done but it is definitely a goal for many. Below are five tips from SlimFast Plan Consultant and Registered Dietitian, Maryann Walsh, to help you balance your work life, family life, and personal life!

  1. Learn to time block personal and professional life
Designating times to spend with friends, family, and yourself can be a great way to give you a mental break from your professional responsibilities. A planner, calendar, app or spreadsheet could be utilized so you know exactly when you need to block off time during the day or night for meetings, family time, or personal time.
  2. If working at home, designate a workspace only to be used during work hours
When working from home it can be difficult to separate work time and personal time. It might feel like you are constantly working no matter where you are in your house or what time it is. To prevent the feeling of never leaving work, it is a great idea to either create an at-home office or have a separate area of your house where you go solely to do work.
  3. Be realistic
At the end of the day or week, review what went well and what might not have gone according to plan. You will be able to have a better understanding of what systems and processes are working for you and what needs improvement, which can ultimately help you on your quest for efficiency and work-life balance.
  4. Take time to put yourself first every now and then
Vacations, stay-cations, self-care days, and even just an hour by yourself here and there throughout the week can help give you time to rest and recharge.
  5. Prioritize
Make a list each day or week of what you need to get done and decide what really needs to get done, what would be nice to get done, and what is a little less urgent. You’ll be able to feel more in control of your to-do list and see what is a priority and what is not.

You may find that taking just a few minutes of each day to plan and prioritize balance can make a tremendous difference in your overall health and well-being as well as the health of your relationships. Remember, sometimes we need to recharge and rest to be our best!
